Hey there, welcome back. No problem, parents. I have been super excited to get today's episode out to all of you. It is jam-packed with information. You may want to grab a notebook and a pen. Otherwise, there are links in the show notes for you to learn more about my resource for you today, which is the New Calm app. So today we're going to learn about this new-to-market app that is doing more than just helping us have a restful night's sleep. I have been using New Calm for a little while now and in this episode I actually share my first experience using the app that definitely piqued my curiosity and it has caused me to use the app daily, sometimes twice a day. New Calm is not just another wellness product. It is a trailblazer in the field of neuroscience with over 33 years of dedicated research and innovation. It is unlike any other product on the market, New Calm boasts a unique combination of patented technology and proven results that truly set it apart. And the other cool thing about it is it's for everyone in your family and easy to use. The president of New Calm, Jim Poole, is here with me in this three-part episode to share how it works and who it's helping. Today we're going to focus on the science behind this innovative technology from alpha waves to theta waves. We're going to examine how New Calm induces sleep relaxation and reduces stress and anxiety. But our conversation doesn't stop there.
Jim's going to discuss how New Calm is transforming the way we manage stress and improve mental well-being. From trauma recovery to supporting our body to heal itself through better sleep and even enhancing athletic performance. And then in part three, parents, he's going to speak a little bit more directly to you. With busy schedules, juggling work and family and everything in between life and parenting can be overwhelming. New Calm provides parents with a tool to manage stress, improve sleep, not just for you, but for your kiddos and maintain a calm centered mindset, even in the midst of your regular everyday chaos. Jim is going to go into a little bit of detail in how New Calm is helping trauma victims, veterans, cancer patients, athletes, and any individual that is working to manage their stress and anxiety. So be sure to follow the show to get alerted when part two and three of my conversation with Jim are published, simply click that little plus sign, subscribe button, or the follow button on the podcast app that you're listening to.
In the show notes, you're going to see that there's a seven-day free trial of New Calm, and you can enter the code NOPROBLEM for 15% off the monthly subscription or the yearly subscription in any product that New Calm offers. If you're new to the show, my name is Jackie Fineman. I'm your host and founder of No Problem Parenting, where we choose to deal with and overcome the challenges in our home. This podcast is designed to help bring resources, tips, tools, techniques, and all things that are going to help you become the confident leader your kids crave you to be. So without further ado, let's get into my conversation with Jim Poole, president of Newcombe.
Welcome to the show, Jim. Thank you for having me. I love the concept of no problem parenting. Sign me up.
Well, and you know, right in the definition of the word problem, it says that problems need to be dealt with and overcome. And so that's what we do here at No Problem Parenting. We take problems and we turn them into no problem. There is always a way.
Jim, let's just dive right in. New Calm is truly unmatched in its field. I've been learning about it for quite a while here now. And with over 33 years of research and innovation, can you just share with the listeners what sets New Calm apart from other wellness products? And just kind of give us the overview of what New Calm is. Wow. What sets us apart is pretty much everything, Jackie. I knew that was going to be a loaded question. I didn't know this. 15 years ago when I took over the leadership of this company, I didn't know the complexity and the challenges associated with pioneering. I didn't.
I thought this was like any other business venture I was going to run. And I thought maybe it'd be two or three year adventure. Pioneering comes with profound problems, not because the pioneers are incapable or impatient. It's the human brain and how our brain is wired. The brain demands a comparison, demands it. And when your brain doesn't have something to compare it to, it gets paralyzed. So years ago, people say, what's NuCalm? I said, well, it's an anxiolytic biomimetic replication of how the body uses its resources to prepare you for relaxation.
What? We use applied neuropsychobiology, biochemistry, physics, algorithms, etc. What? And we did all this science and it stood there and nobody ever understood it. The brain is amazing. It's so fascinating. And in the last 10 years, we've learned more about the brain and neuroscience than we had collectively in the previous 1,000 combined. That's amazing. Dr.
Holloway, a brilliant neuroscientist, quantum physicist, Rhodes Scholar at Oxford, studied philosophy at Sorbonne University in Paris. He was an eclectic genius of the highest order and magnitude. But in addition to his genius was a compassion and a heart that probably superseded the size of his brain. Just an amazing gifted human being. The goal of New Calm was to find a way to predictably and safely help the human brain downregulate stress, focused on trauma.
Now, trauma being the highest magnitude of dysfunction of the seven diagnosable anxiety disorders, the traumatic brain is the most difficult to manage and live with. So that was his call. It took him 19 years to figure this out. So in the last 15 years, I've been running this company. We've gone from an insolvent idea 15 years ago to a hundred million dollar neuroscience company. And along the way, I've seen a lot and I've traveled the earth. I've been to every continent. I've lectured probably 300 times to the leading doctors around the world.
and I've seen a lot of new products come in. And I just ask one question, how long did it take you to invent that? Okay, what is it? Because there is no shortcut when it comes to the human brain.
Complex problems demand complex solutions. And I know with great confidence and humility that Blake was the smartest human I'd ever met and it took him 19 years to figure this out. And for the past 15, we've been refining and continuously improving. So I like data to support an answer to that question, which is a great question. Because 10 years ago, Jackie, I'm traveling the earth. I'm at the Royal College of Physicians. I'm at the Pentagon. I'm all over. And I'm educating people on the necessity for recovery and sleep. And no one seemed to care. 10 years ago, it was a badge of honor to sleep less. We didn't really understand it. Today, there's a plethora of gizmos and gadgets and binaural beat apps and all this stuff. So how do we differentiate? First and foremost,
a couple of years ago, we were a $6,000 FDA class three medical device. Bingo. There's nothing in this space that was an FDA class three medical device. Nothing. CVAC, infrared sauna, gizmos, gadgets, apps, Calm, Headspace, BrainTap, Apollo Neuro, you name it, nothing has that credibility.
Health Canada approved. Military approved. We've been working with the United States Department of Defense for 14 years. NSS certified for sport. The only patent in the world for balancing and maintaining the health of the human autonomic nervous system. So for your listeners who don't know what the autonomic nervous system is or can't remember 10th grade biology, the autonomic nervous system is part of our primordial midbrain that's designed and does fight flight or freeze stress fear anxiety depression and worry so it's a really big contributor to our daily function we were awarded the only patent in the world for balancing that aspect of the human brain it took us five years of research with the leading statistical biophysicists at harvard medical school nasa mathematicians studying stage four cancer and the Chicago Blackhawks. In 2021, we were awarded another first patent, and that is methods used to elicit a state change in a human being. But probably the biggest marker that really allows people to understand the complexity and the strength of what we've created, New Calm Rescue,
which is one of six products on the mobile app, has been used in over 2 million surgical procedures replacing general anesthesia. So somebody gets wheeled into an operatory, they're listening to our physics wearing an eye mask, and there is no general anesthesia. That's how powerful what we've created. So there is nothing like this in the world. It is very complex. The science has been refined, refined, refined. We look a lot like other stuff out there because we, with purpose and intention, took 34 years of patented clinically proven neuroscience and brought it to a mobile app. Not because we thought that was a cool thing to do. We simply want to make this so easy to help people. And we've gotten to the place where we just want you to use the product to take care of yourself and stop using drugs. That's our goal. So that's what we've done.
So yes, we're not even remotely on the same plane as any other product out there. We're very hardcore left brain neuroscience. All the institutional clinical studies and regulatory, all that's done. Now we have an app that can do really good things for humans with no drugs, no side effects, no harm.
Our goal is to create awareness of the possibilities for people to get away from drugs. Yeah, it's just absolutely incredible. The app is helping with stress reduction and improves sleep quality and focus. You have a variety of different tracks to listen to depending on what you're needing or wanting, right?
So on the app, there are six discrete products that we call journeys. These six products manage all five categories of brainwave function. So the human brain oscillates in a frequency range of 41 hertz. this is physics it's not up for debate it's not gray we know exactly what it's doing of those categories you have delta and deep sleep you have theta in healing you've got alpha and creativity in the first stage of sleep then you have beta which is learning then stress then high stress then out of your marbles fight or flight and then there's gamma which is a unique spot that's high intensity mistake free focus so every human on earth the operating system of a human is a 41 hertz frequency range. I like that because it's black and white.
My parents are both psychotherapists and I worked in the state mental health institutions of Massachusetts for five years. I went to Harvard Medical School for an MD PhD, neuropsychopathology, and got in and said, I don't want to go to school for eight more years, went to business school. So I have a bend towards this and I love this and it's complicated. the etiology of mental illness or the comorbidity of trauma with addiction it's there's complications to it it's not easy but physics is simple when your brain is oscillating at one hertz we know what you're doing you're in dreamless like deep sleep when your brain is at five hertz we know you're doing you're healing so this part is really fascinating for me in the whole world 8.5 billion people have the same operating system so that's why we built something that is so profound so predictable and reliable and will never not work.
So our goal was to find a way to down-regulate the human brainwave frequency from stressed, which is a higher frequency, into a certain spot. And we did it. It just took 19 years of invention. And I've been running this company for 15 years.
So the last 15 years, it's been refinement, continuous improvement, refinement, continuous improvement, validation studies, clinical studies. all of that ended in june of 2022 when we launched focus which was the final category of brainwave function so our six products deep sleep rescue power nap flow state focus and ignite manage all five categories of brainwave function okay rescue is the key it is the foundational therapy that every human on earth should use every single day. What did we do? Well, Blake Holloway was a quantum physicist, neuroscientist, naturopath, Rhodes Scholar at Oxford, philosopher at Sorbonne University, a freak. He was an intellectual freak. He was also a rape victim and he carried that trauma with him for the entirety of his life. And he had a clinical practice in Texas working primarily with trauma. People coming out of the theater of war or female abuse victims, all complex trauma. And the reason he spent 19 years of his life inventing New Calm was simple. He said, if I follow conventional therapy and give you a narcotic based pharmaceutical, I'm not solving the problem. In fact, I'm not even addressing the problem.
The problem lies in the autonomic nervous system. The narcotic is a central nervous system suppressant. So we're not even on the same equation. We're not even close. So masking the symptom and just dulling you, you're going to kill yourself. That's the road you're going down. It's not because you're a coward. It's not because you're weak. It's because you get so tired of living like this. You just finally say, I'm done. So that is the etiology of how this all started in 1990. It's been a long journey. Rescue was our primary product and only one product from 2009 to 2018. 2018, we launched PowerNap, which is just a junior varsity version of Rescue.
All right, so what are we doing? Rescue is coming into your brain and there are two ways for us to trick and manage your brainwave. We can do it visually. It's called a frequency following response, or we can do it through your ears. We do it through your ears. So music people think, because people are inherently lazy, they want a silver bullet. They don't want to work. They don't want to give time. They don't want to read. I mean, it's crazy human function today. So they think because people have lied to them and said, hey, listen to this music, you'll relax.
Music cannot change the mental state of a human being. If you step into a household and the mom and dad just had a fight and the kids witnessed it and everybody's oscillating at a very high frequency, they are stressed out of their marbles. And you say, hey, everybody sit around here. We're gonna put on a Celine Dion song and relax.
That doesn't work. So music cannot change your state. This is really important for people to understand because people don't know this. Music cannot change your state. Music can elevate your mood for a little bit, but even then it doesn't sustain. So say you went to the gym or your son's going to the gym and he likes to work out to ACDC. The first song, he's pumping.
Second song, he's pumping. About the third song, that emotional high is gone because the brain has figured out, wait a second, all these songs sound the same. I'm bored. Music can't change your state. We're not using music to change your state. We're using music to create a nice experience for the user. Underneath the music, we're carrying one to two gigabytes of mathematics. Like a Trojan horse, you can't hear what we're doing. That's what we've done. The complexity is incredible.
We have the only patent in the world for a system and method to change the mental state of a human being. Two gigabytes of information. That's over 500 times the size of a song. We're not using music.
We can't. So we literally are coming into your brain and saying, hey, we don't care who you are. We don't care if you have cancer, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, addiction, trauma. You're healthy.
You're a monk. You're one years old. You're 100 years old. We don't care.
We're taking it to the same place because we know there's a secret place that's really healthy. It's called Theta, T-H-E-T-A, and it's the healing zone. I've been using NuCalm, but I just wanted to share the very first experience that I had with it. The very first night I did deep sleep.
And, you know, I've been an early riser forever. And often five or six hours of sleep, and I feel I'm just up. Even if I don't feel refreshed, I'm just awake. It's just, I think it's all the sleep I need.
But then by one or two in the afternoon, I'm just exhausted. I'm fatigued, right? So I'm like, okay, I need this sleep app. I got to try this.
I got to try to get a good seven, eight hours of sleep. So the first night I put it on a speaker in my room and I'm listening to it. And within five minutes, I took this like deep sighing breath, you know, kind of like after a really long cry, hard cry or something where you're like, you know, like that. And I'm laying there still as ever.
And I take this deep sighing breath and it was just like my whole body relaxed. And I went, okay, this is weird. And then my legs relaxed. And I was like, I didn't know my legs were tense.
What like that? What is happening? And you kind of do this mind thing. Like, is this made up?
Am I really experiencing this? But that happened several times in the, within about the first week of using the app. And I was sleeping through the night and or if I woke, I'm hearing it in the background and I'm right back to sleep and not having those thoughts of what I'll have to do the next day or what I didn't get done or whatever. So what happened? What is it doing to me?
It's like magic, isn't it, Jackie? It is. I'm a skeptic. I get pitched a lot of things, Jim, in this, you know, doing the podcast and stuff. And I try almost every one of them out if I can.
but yeah it it's it's pretty amazing and even throughout that first week oh 10 days into it my my dad had a get together at his house and i'm helping organize the get together normally i am like mrs overdo it jackie i'm on the go i'm making sure everything's organized people are greeted and feel welcomed and i'm all kind of hyper about it right about an hour into the party people are there my sister looks at me and she said are you okay and I said what do you mean she said are you tired and I said no actually I feel great she said I said what's wrong what's what am I doing what am I missing something she said you're so calm and I was like whoa and hadn't thought about that but I'm like yeah dang I am it's these subtle things where I'm like this has got to be doing something for me it's doing a lot so we We are delivering patented neuroscience through an app.
This is an important differentiation. We're not an app company. We didn't say, hey, let's create a cool thing for traffic or a cool thing for Starbucks. This isn't an app company.
This is neuroscience. And how the brain works is fascinating. Now, some of us have heard of brainwaves and some of us haven't. The human brain in our operating system is the same operating system for all of us.
There's a 41 hertz frequency range, which is a wave, right? Remember FM and AM radio and long wave and short waveform or whatever. So the brain operates in a 41 hertz range. And in that range, there are five categories of brainwave function. Delta is the slowest waveform and the deepest.
it is deep sleep and is 0.5 hertz to 4 hertz theta th eta is known as the healing zone and it is 4 hertz to 7 hertz so all this is is frequency alpha is creativity in the first stage of sleep is 8 hertz to 12 hertz so in the sleep architecture there are three categories of brain function. Delta, theta, alpha. Then we have the broadest range, which is called beta. 12 to 15 hertz of beta is you're awake and you're functioning, but you're mentally lethargic.
15 to 20 hertz is the learning zone. You're in a state where you can encode information better, process information better, learn new things better, consolidate to memory, because there's no distractions in your brain. 20 to 25 hertz is where most people operate during the day. A fair amount of stress, worry, anticipatory anxiety, anxiety. 25 to 30 hertz is a high level of agitation, distraction, stress, worry, anxiety. 30 to 38 hertz, you're out of your marbles. You are in pure fight or flight and you have no cognitive availability. You're not thinking clearly. You're literally just in a survival mode. And then interestingly enough, Jackie, above the highest level of stress is this sweet spot called gamma, 39 to 41 hertz. And in that state, and there's a lot of literature in the neuroscience sector today about the health benefits of oscillating your brainwave function at 40 hertz to clean plaque out of your brain,
to help your brain with clarity and being on point. So there are five categories of brainwave function. Delta, theta, alpha, beta, gamma. And here's what's cool. It is physics and math. It is not up for debate. There's a certainty about this. So when your brain is oscillating at one hertz, we know what you're doing. You are in dreamless like deep sleep. When your brain is at five hertz, we know what you're doing. Your cells are restoring. You're in the healing zone. You're recovering. When your brain is at 10 hertz, we know what you're doing. You're in the creative, relaxed state of alpha. 15 hertz, you're in the low end of thinking clearly. 18.4 hertz, you are in the learning zone. 22 hertz, you're stressed out. 27 hertz, you're really stressed out. 30 hertz, you're out of your marbles. You're sweating. You're distracted. Your brain's not working.
35 hertz, you're in pure fight or flight. And then 41 hertz, you're in this incredible zone of high performance, mistake-free intensity. Wow. That is the operating system of our brain.
What we figured out was using your ears as a carrier, we present your brain with signals and a pattern that your brain follows. It's like a pace car in, you know, like car racing. We have music to serve as a distraction and a carrier for the software that we want to present to your brain. You cannot hear what we're doing. It is inaudible to the human ear. In that software, whether it's one gigabyte to two and a half gigabytes of information, this is 300 to 500 times larger than a song. It shows you the complexity of what we're doing. We're simply presenting your brain with a pattern. You felt what NuCalm can do immediately. People are like, hey, how long does it take? It takes no time at all. Your first experience, you're going to experience something. And the more stress that we're releasing, the more profound the first experiences are. So with New Calm alone, rescue and deep sleep, we've helped thousands of people stay alive. In fact, just about six weeks ago, this doesn't happen often enough. I think people just get caught up in their life. And I know they're filled with gratitude, but we don't hear it a lot. We got a random email from somebody to Dr. Ranicki and myself. And I said, hey,
I just wanted to reach out to you and just express my gratitude. I was in your program in January of 2015. I was told I had a month to live. I'm still alive.
I've seen my three children grow up to be adults, and I have four grandchildren. And I just want to say thank you for helping me be here. That's incredible. So there's another quote that I'll never forget.
This is a woman who's 42. She had three kids, and she had brain cancer. and she said, when I use New Calm Rescue, it's the only 40 minutes of my day that I get to forget I have cancer. We're not curing cancer. We're a facilitator to allow the body to do what the body knows how to do and your body knows how to heal you. It's your monkey mind that says, no, we have to stay in this fear state. Don't you understand? This is cancer, Jim. We got to stay on alert.
wrong when we need to sleep the most we're getting sleep the least the stress response is accelerating the disease and accelerating the end of life and we just come to the rescue say hey guess what we have put headphones on an eye mask and voila we stabilize all that chaos and we put the body back in control it is a miracle and it is amazing so we have six channels that we put in one app. We did this because we didn't want to create six apps and complicate stuff, but it's a lot. There are five categories of brainwave. You have deep sleep and healing and focus and inspiration and energy. So there are three packages that we offer, and this is based on years of use. And we can, one of the cool things about data is we can see everyone's usage pattern.
We can say, okay, this is really resonating, or this is how they're doing it. We can build protocols. We have protocols for the FBI and the military and professional athletes. So collectively taking all this wisdom and data, we have three packages. The first package is our most affordable, $14.99 US a day, 50 cents a day. It gets you rescue. Rescue has the broadest, most therapeutic value of anything we've done. And it's been our core technology for 15 years.
but nobody buys that because it's not enough. We have Sleep Suite, which gives you three of the products for the price of two. So $29.99 per month, a dollar a day, gives you rescue, power nap, and deep sleep. That is the fundamental. That would be the lowest recommendation for everybody. Everybody on earth should have at least Sleep Suite because we all need help with stress management, anxiety management, worry, and sleep. There's no judgment.
We're all just struggling. We work with monks. So you want to think judgment. Hello, our society, is that out of balance that monks are using NuCalm to relax? Yes. And they have been for 10 years.
Then we have Edge. Edge gets you access to all of our products. More than 70 hours of the world's most powerful patented clinically proven neuroscience on one mobile app. Delta with deep sleep, healing with rescue, power nap, creativity and alpha waves of flow state, focus and mental acuity with focus, and high energy mistake-free performance with Ignite.
Gets you everything for $49.99 per month. That is $1.67 a day.
I know inflation's crazy, But I also know that when I go to Starbucks, I pay $5.65 for a cup of coffee. Well, that's not helping me. In fact, it's doing damage to me.
But I drink it. Well, $1.67 a day to take care of yourself is a pretty good investment. Well, and I love that you have an annual plan too.
So if people want to pay for the whole year, do the seven-day trial. And then if you want to upgrade your plan, you can. How about for families? What are the options then?
Does a family need to buy a subscription for each child? How does that work? Every child. So every mobile device or every human has a subscription.
That's absolutely true. I don't know that we'll do a family plan. You don't see this a lot in like diagnostics. I don't grab my wife's Apple watch.
And so everything's kind of as an independent operator and human being. The money that you save, not that it's a replacement for therapy, but it certainly can be. Jackie, it does replace. And we think about investment and what we do.
We're creatures of habit, and the human brain is relatively incapable of managing our own mental state. We rely on external stimulation. So in your kitchen, you could literally put on your table coffee, alcohol, recreational drugs, antidepressants, anti-anxiety, and sleep pills. And on the other side of the table, you could have your mobile device with our app.
That's what we've done. We've allowed you a simple, safe, and predictable way to change your state any state you want. Because the brain and our brainwave function is derived from our environment. We are passive in how we manage our brain.
And we are reliant on external stimulation to activate any of it. So we don't know this because we're not taught how our brain works. But that is the reality. So this app, literally, if you didn't want to drink coffee, you just listen to Ignite in the morning.
You don't want to have alcohol because you had a bad day. You listen to Rescue. You don't need sleeping pills. Sleeping pills don't help sleep architecture.
They simply ensure that you're not awake. They suppress your central nervous system. They knock you out. You're not getting sleep.
You're not going through the 100-minute sleep cycle, the 90-minute sleep cycle. It doesn't work that way. They are dangerous. They come with side effects and they're not helping you.
So you don't have to do New Calm, but please stop taking sleep drugs. There's no evidence. In fact, the evidence is clear. It doesn't mimic sleep architecture.
All right. So this seems like a good place to pause this conversation. There is so much information. And in part two of our three-part series, we're going to talk about the central nervous system and trauma.
how the brain works, and how New Calm is helping to manage the brain. We're going to talk about New Calm's gift to people who have endured trauma, attachment disorders, veterans, athletes. We're also going to talk a little bit about ADHD and mental health in general. And Jim is also going to share how New Calm is partnering with cancer wellness programs. Remember parents, there's a link in the show notes for you to try New Calm for seven days, seven day free trial.
